Vernon Hills is a village in Lake County, Illinois, United States. The population was 20,120 at the 2000 census, and estimated to be 23,957 as of 2005. Vernon Hills serves as a retail hub for its surrounding area (Libertyville, Lake Forest, Mundelein, Lincolnshire, Buffalo Grove,).
According to the United States Census Bureau, the village has a total area of 7.6 square miles (20 km), of which, 7.4 square miles (19 km) of it is land and 0.2 square miles (0.52 km) of it (2.49%) is water.
As of the census of 2000, there were 20,120 people, 7,568 households, and 5,312 families residing in the village. The population density was 2,708.3 people per square mile (1,045.5/km²). There were 7,813 housing units at an average density of 1,051.7 per square mile (406.0/km²). The racial makeup of the village was 82% White, 12% Asian, 2% African American, and 0.1% Native American. 3% are from other races, and 2% from two or more races. 7% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
